Go by your trouser waist, not the label.
Vanity sizing means the number on your jeans stopped being accurate years ago. Measure the waistband of the pair you actually wear and use that.

Measure the trousers, not yourself
Lay a pair you wear often flat and measure the waistband end to end, then double it. That number is more honest than any label.

Between two sizes? Go down
There is 5% elastane in the fabric and it gives about two centimetres. These are cut to sit close rather than loose.
